Garry G. Gordon has brought his expertise and experience to the readers of Workplace Material Handling & Safety magazine (WMHS) in the form of numerous articles he has written for WMHS over the years. Mr. Gordon is passionate about all things audiology, and has helped the occupational safety experts and industrial managers who read WMHS stay up to date about audiology innovations and best practices and how to use them to protect the hearing of workers who are exposed to noise. His thorough understanding of the hearing conservation market makes him the right person to guide others toward a profitable embrace of audiology.
The most common causes of hearing loss in the U.S. are noise damage and aging. While the interaction of these two is complicated and yet to be unraveled, the only “methods of control” are those involving noise exposures. Garry has been involved in the analysis, definition, and protection of people for decades.
His company, E.A.R., was founded by Garry and continues to be a leader in the management and control of noise-induced hearing loss. His business and personal contacts and contracts encompass the U.S. and abroad. He has been an advocate of participation in recreational audiology, as well as in industrial audiology. He is widely recognized as an authority in these areas.
This book presents an accumulation of his experience, his knowledge, and his recommendations for the basis of audiologist participation in these areas.
I first met Garry at the AAO last century, where he generously offered us the opportunity to market Insta-Mold custom hearing protection earplugs in Japan. Our company, Meilleur Co., Ltd., specializes in importing medical products. Initially, we aimed to introduce Insta-Mold to hearing aid sellers, who are accustomed to making ear molds. Since 1992, we have been attending the AAO, audiology meetings, and ENT meetings to promote Insta-Mold in Japan.
Garry has visited Japan several times to speak at seminars for the Japan Hearing Instruments Technician’s Association, providing practical skill training. During his visits, we also explored industrial accounts such as Honda together. Garry emphasized that the industrial and recreational markets are larger than the medical market, prompting us to exhibit Insta-Mold at the Japan Society of Occupational Health and Japan Industrial Health Safety Association.
With Garry’s ongoing support, the importance of hearing protection has gained recognition in Japan, particularly in fields like shooting sports, racing, and industry. The Japanese Society of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery has even launched a campaign, featuring a famous actor, to prevent hearing impairment.
For decades, as the expert in hearing conservation, Garry Gordan, M.S., has provided cutting-edge educational and practical training, along with hearing protection products, for factory workers, shooters, race car crews, and many others. As the consultant for Chevron in California, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, and many others, E.A.R. products and recommendations have been invaluable. There has never been a greater need to protect hearing, not only for improving individual quality of life, but to reduce the potential for memory loss, Alzheimer’s, and debilitation. Audiologists must be the tip of the spear. As a clinician and industrial audiologist, my experience and financial results support everything this text represents. It is a roadmap for how clinicians can integrate themselves into an active role in hearing conservation. As the guide for the profession’s transition into a more successful future, outside of hearing aids, I encourage providers to read this book and apply the principles and practices to expand their services and improve the bottom line.
I’ve known and worked with Garry Gordon for 40 years. Is unquestionably the most knowledgeable person in the world regarding the recreational audiology field. He not only knows the industry, but he is doing something about helping people around the world to save their hearing and enhance their quality of life. Garry has hit the mark with this text as it encompasses his 55 years of field experience condensed into a compelling rendition of innovative and profitable techniques that practice owners and clinicians may introduce into their businesses.
